More Security
Sadly, even if you have a lot of useful skills, it’s still more than possible that, at some point in your life, you will lose your job. It could be personal disagreements with someone at the office, a pandemic that shuts down your industry, or anything in between.
No matter what, that moment is going to hurt. How badly it hurts can depend somewhat on whether or not you can get some other income streams coming. I teach mostly September-April. In those summer months, where I do not get a salary, it’s great to have my other writing gigs and consulting work to keep the bills paid.
These days, having options in a world wherein things are often outside of your control can very much help you sleep at night. There will be challenges in maintaining several jobs and income streams, to be sure, but, at least for me, I would rather face a time management problem than a late car payment problem.
