Three Shirts to Try This Summer

I don’t know about you, but in my neck of the woods it’s starting to get seriously hot. And, now with the world going back to something like normal, weddings, parties, and casual drinks with friends are starting to become possible again. When we’re out and about, sweat stains are not the look we’re going for.

One way to cut down on the sweat and up the style factor on your summer outfits, one easy way to do is to experiment with new shirts. Here, I’ll recommend three that I think are not only fashionable for this summer but will remain in style for years to come. My goal is to help you get a shirt this summer that you’ll be pulling out of the closet a decade from now for drinks with your friends and still look fresh.

The first I’ll recommend is a johnny collar polo. These are polo shorts that still have a placket, but no buttons. Before you get too concerned about showing too much skin, don’t worry: the placket on these is typically a little shorter than polos with buttons. This little detail adds a touch of class to polo shirts and can be successfully combined with anything from shorts to a suit if you coordinate colors well. I’d play it on the safe side and get a solid color, probably dark blue or black, but there are a lot of options for patterns that can be a major statement piece.

Second, the t shirt can get a nice upgrade from the addition of a pocket. It’s a small detail, but in men’s fashion, it is the small details that can make an outfit pop. Summer makes our options sort of limited compared to cooler seasons, as jackets are where menswear shines. Adding a pocket t to your lineup adds a little bit of interest to the otherwise most basic of shirts. I use the pocket on mine, usually for sunglasses or a pocket notebook, both of which come in handy pretty much daily.

Finally, camp collar shirts are one of my summer favorites. These shirts, usually made out of lightweight cotton, have a collar that somewhat resembles a small lapel. This makes them casual to be sure, and also helps them breathe a little bit. If you’re willing to experiment with patterns, these shirts can make up a good chunk of a versatile summer wardrobe, and thus I’d highly recommend them.

Generally, I’d recommend experimenting with colors or patterns within these three, but within reason. For example, before I buy a new shirt, I think of four different outfits I could put together using them, ideally with either pants or shorts. The goal is to get a shirt that I’ll actually wear, not one that will only look good with a single outfit, and thus will spend most of its time in my closet. If all else fails, do something classic like a navy pocket t shirt and get out into the world: there are beers to drink and hot dogs to be grilled, it’s summer!

Unless it's a car event, or around the house, T-shirts in guys over 50 are not a good look. In the heat, linen or light cotton bowling / hawaiian style shirts you leave untucked are my favorites.
