Among the many troubling things you’ve likely seen on the news lately is the developing situation in Ukraine, which sees the US and Russia having some increasingly intense conversations about the role of Ukraine in their mutual relationships.
Here, I’m going to bring my skills as an academic who teaches international relations to bear in an attempt to give my take on what’s going on in Ukraine, and, potentially, why and how this conflict could escalate, though I do not think that direct...
As of September 5, 2021, the United States has largely withdrawn from Afghanistan after two decades of combatting the Taliban. The Taliban have now become the de facto government in the country, leaving many to question what happened and how the US came to become so involved in a twenty-year war.
In this piece, I plan to do just that. First, I’ll cover some of the basic facts and figures of the war. From there, I’ll trace the history of US involvement in Afghanistan, with an eye to...
Shortly after writing the article about Jeff Bezos’ then-upcoming trip to space, Sir Richard Branson caught headlines by announcing he would also be going to space. Not only that, he was going to beat Bezos to space by a week as a passenger on Virgin Galactic’s spaceship. Now that both billionaires have successfully experienced weightlessness, it’s time to determine which billionaire “won”.
Virgin Galactic takes a much different approach to spaceflight than Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin...
In mid-July 2021, unrest began in the streets of most Cuban cities. As a political scientist living in Miami, I’m waiting with bated breath to see what happens. In the meantime, this can be a learning moment for us all.
In this piece, I’ll try my best to explain what’s going on in Cuba as of this moment. To do so, I’ll walk through a brief history that gives you some context, as well as explaining the importance of Cuban to Americans. Once that’s done, I’ll briefly cover the events as best...
Jeff Bezos, the richest man in the world, recently announced he would be taking an 11 minute ride into Space on July 20th. This flight comes just two weeks after he formally steps down as the CEO of Amazon on July 5th, the ecommerce empire he built from scratch over the course of 25+ years. The space flight will take place aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket, shuttling Bezos and 3 other passengers just over 62 miles - past the Karman line - into space for a few minutes of weightlessness...
The United States Army is in the process of developing a new round that will replaced the 5.56mm NATO in use for most soldiers. In doing so, they’re also asking for new rifles and machine guns to replace the M4 and the M249.
This represents a fairly dramatic shakeup in modern infantry combat, and there will be interesting developments that come from this. Here, I’m going to give you the highlights of the story so far, and some of my thoughts on where it might be heading next. These are...
One of the more controversial military development projects of the recent past is the F35, Lockheed Martin’s newest fighter aircraft. While the project has been ongoing since the 1980s, the F35 is still having some major teething problems, drawing criticism for the ever-growing costs of the program.
Originally, the idea behind the F35 came out of the 1980s, when several NATO countries came together to seek a Joint Strike Fighter or JSF. The JSF program sought, ideally, to make a single...
Northrop Grumman and the US Air Force recently released renderings of the B-21 Raider, the next generation of stealth bomber. The Raider, named after the Doolittle Raiders for their surprise attacks on Japan during World War II, will be the most technologically advanced bomber in the world. One of the renderings released shows a wide, sleek aircraft with a flying wing design resembling that of the B-2 Spirit. The Air Force plans to use the B-21 to replace their aging fleet of B-1B Lancers...
British man George King, also known by his very appropriate nickname “Daredevil”, recently scaled a 400ft skyscraper in Spain. The building, 4-star Melia Barcelona Sky hotel, is in the middle of Barcelona and is known for its glass walls. King managed to climb it in around 20 minutes, which is an impressive feat in itself. Even more impressive? He did it with no safety gear. No ropes, no lifelines, or anything other than his bare hands and some chalk.
He posed for a picture when he...
On February 20, 2021, United Airlines flight 328 made an emergency landing shortly after takeoff from Denver due to an engine failure. Flight 328 was 4 minutes into its flight to Honolulu when the right engine failed and caught fire. 20 minutes later, the pilots successfully landed the plane back at Denver International Airport without any injuries or deaths. Debris from the failure covered a radius of at least a mile, damaging structures and vehicles on the ground but miraculously avoided...
Being an astronaut is enough to make most men jealous in itself, but Jonathan “Jonny” Kim has an even longer list of accolades that would make any man feel inadequate. In addition to his Astronaut status, Kim is also a Harvard trained Doctor of Medicine and a US Navy SEAL with 2 deployments and over 100 combat missions. He was appointed in December of 2020 to the Artemis program led by NASA with the goal of putting humans back on the moon by 2024. If all of that wasn’t enough, he’s also...
On the morning of April 26, 1986, Reactor 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded. During what was supposed to be routine testing and maintenance, operators made a series of errors that resulted in a massive explosion. At least 5 percent of the radioactive material from the core was pushed out into the atmosphere, distributing radiation for hundreds of miles and endangering the lives of thousands of people. The initial fires were extinguished within a few hours and nearby cities were...
